On June 13, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host the Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk at Navy Pier in Chicago. Thousands of participants will walk 16–18 miles through the night to raise funds for suicide prevention research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.
We’re seeking dependable volunteers who can commit to the full overnight shift (approximately 5:00pm – 5:00am). The event relies on crew members who are steady, flexible, and comfortable working behind the scenes to support walkers throughout the night.
Volunteer roles include:

Bike or Moto Support – Patrol sections of the route to support walkers and monitor safety

Sweep Team (van drivers/navigators) – Transport participants who are injured or unable to continue

Medical Crew – Licensed medical professionals who can respond to minor injuries and provide basic care along the route

Route Marking (advance & fix-it teams) – Place and monitor directional signage

Water & Ice Crew – Deliver supplies to rest stops as needed

Route Clean Up – Ensure each stop is left as clean as (or cleaner than) we found it
Participant Support - Licensed mental health professionals who can provide emotional support
Nearly all roles are assigned individually and do not require volunteers to sign up as a team. That said, we do have three Route Stops that require a Team Captain and a dedicated group to help manage those locations overnight. If your organization prefers to serve together, that’s a great option.
